About Pickle Phil ESL

A "pickle" is a tricky spot — the meeting where the words won't come, the interview that decides everything, the email you rewrite five times. Pickle Phil ESL exists to get you out of those spots in English, and to make sure you're never stuck in them again.

Hi — I'm Philip, founder of Pickle Phil and your teacher.

With an academic background in risk management and a current path in philosophy, I've always been fascinated by the power of language and culture. As a digital nomad, I've had the privilege of exploring the world and discovering the beauty of diverse perspectives.

Over ten years and more than two thousand hours of teaching, I've developed an approach that combines expertise in TESOL, TEFL, and interview preparation. My goal is to help you master professional English and achieve your career aspirations.

When I'm not teaching, you'll find me playing squash, walking my dog, or deep in philosophy — drawn to Spinoza, Nietzsche, and Plato on overcoming adversity and pragmatism, to Sun Tzu's strategy, and to the Confucian emphasis on integrity and ethical living.

My teaching philosophy: improve

My approach is simple but powerful: every step forward is a victory. I celebrate small wins, treat mistakes as learning opportunities, and keep you moving steadily forward — with the skills and the motivation to succeed.

How my classes work

Each lesson is built around you. A typical class moves through real-life dialogue (pronunciation, vocabulary, clarity); comprehension; discussion where you share your own thoughts and get guidance on accuracy; targeted grammar — the most frequently used tenses and structures, following the 80/20 principle; and vocabulary to expand how you express yourself.

My online classroom is a safe space where mistakes are welcome as part of learning. I get to know you, tailor every lesson to your profile, set clear objectives, track your progress, and give you constructive feedback every step of the way.

Why "Pickle Phil"

Our name says what we do. "Pickle" stands for the challenging, high-stakes situations professionals face in English — the negotiation, the presentation, the interview. "Phil" is the friendly, human side of how I teach. Business English isn't just grammar and vocabulary; it's cultural understanding, professional confidence, and being able to say what you mean when it counts.
